Brave Moves. Courageous Joy.

Dance on stage, in public space, as discourse or in everyday life. The first edition of the Tanztriennale explores the potential of dance - as an art form, as a social force, as an impulse for new perspectives. Across cultures, communities and generations, the Tanztriennale invites dance professionals and the general public to watch, participate, think, talk and dance!

The Tanztriennale is a new initiative for dance. It is a long-term, recurring event and stands for a clear attitude: dance should be made visible, strengthened and recognized as a socially relevant practice.

The spectrum of artists invited to the inaugural edition ranges from internationally renowned companies to the local Hamburg dance scene. In addition, the Tanztriennale will enter Hamburg's urban space with artistic interventions and a city parade. The city itself becomes a stage. Throughout the week, events will take place both during the day and in the evening at various locations - Hamburg will become an international hot spot for dance.

As part of the multi-day forum, professional dance makers, international delegations and representatives of various cultural policy networks and organizations from Germany and around the world will come to Hamburg to exchange ideas on how dance can be strengthened as an art form and how the visibility of artistic diversity can be increased.

Monthly events have been taking place since June 2025 and are already anchoring the Tanztriennale in the city and the dance scene. Every month, All Moves invites all Hamburg residents with and without previous dance experience to discover new forms of movement. The monthly Moving Meetings bring together dance makers from all genres, dance cultures and backgrounds. As part of the Counter Balance residency format newly launched by the Tanztriennale, four artistic tandems will work on their respective projects at various locations in Germany between March and June 2026.

The Tanztriennale is a shared space in which different dance cultures meet, exchange ideas and learn from each other. Dance belongs to everyone - every body, every background, every story.

In October 2024, Gwen Hsin-Yi Chang and Monica Gillette were selected as Artistic Directors of the Tanztriennale. Their vision is to bring together different artistic practices, perspectives and contexts, make them visible, explore their social role and create a space for encounters.

Their story is simple and consistent: courage is a practice. Joy is a driving force. Both grow when people dance together:
