Every year, a jury of critics independently selects the 10 most remarkable productions from up to 600 productions from German-speaking countries, which are shown in Berlin in May. The rest of the festival program discusses aesthetic, social and cultural policy issues with and in front of an audience.

At the International Forum, artists from theater-related disciplines from all continents come together in Berlin to (re)think theater and make connections. The festival is critically accompanied and reflected upon by the up-and-coming cultural journalists of the Theatertreffen blog. As part of Open Campus, students and Berlin school pupils are given the opportunity to participate in Theatertreffen events. In addition, since 2021 the Forum for Ecological Sustainability in the Theater has regularly brought together representatives of the invited theaters to discuss sustainable cultural production. In addition, several prizes are traditionally awarded during the festival: the Berlin Theater Prize, the Alfred Kerr Actors' Prize and the 3sat Prize.
