The Thomasius Club is named in memory of the Leipzig philosopher and legal scholar Christian Thomasius, who began publishing his Monatsgespräche in 1688. The Thomasius Club follows on from the idea of this journal to convey scientific content in German. The approximately one-hour discussions are made available as podcasts for interested parties.

The Thomasius Club is an open discussion group that invites academics and asks them about current topics in their research. The Thomasius Club program is carefully selected and decided by a small group of active members.

The Thomasius Club started in 2006, organized by cultiv e. V., with the support of Klaus Finke from the university bookshop and "Horns Erben", in whose premises over 60 discussions have been held. The Connewitzer Verlagsbuchhandlung and the city of Leipzig also supported the program at times. Since October 2015, the Thomasius Club has been held in media partnership with the Gerda Henkel Foundation's science portal L.I.S.A. as a series of events organized by Leipzig University Library. Since 2022, the Institute of Cultural Studies at Leipzig University has supported the Thomasius Club as an additional partner.

Admission to the events is free. Interested parties are welcome to participate in the planning.
