The Literaturbüro NRW, based in Düsseldorf, began its work in 1980 as the first German-language literary office; the Literaturbüro NRW e.V. association was founded in 1981. The main task of the non-profit organization is to promote and disseminate literature. The office is financed in equal parts by the city of Düsseldorf and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, which is why its work focuses on both the state capital and the surrounding regions. The program and projects include readings with national and international authors, various thematic event series, further education and training courses (also for non-native speakers), own publications and literature in public spaces. Another focus is the promotion of children and young people in NRW who enjoy writing and/or are artistically involved with language. The NRW Literature Office is also the sponsor of the network Rhineland Literature Network.
