Leipzig University Library opens its new media treasure chest and invites you to surprising film evenings. We are showing a pearl from the 2022-year-old collection of the traditional Leipzig video library Filmgalerie Westend. Be surprised by the selection of films!
In a short talk, experts will introduce the screening and reveal why the film of the evening was of particular importance to the video library.

The film collection goes back to the former Leipzig Filmgalerie Westend, which was an institution for cineastes in Leipzig. It covers an enormous range of eras and genres. In addition to classics of film history, it includes arthouse productions and documentaries. Many films are rarities that are not easy to obtain, even in times of digital availability. For this reason, the collection is extremely remarkable both in terms of its size and its composition.
Thanks to the initiative of the Institute of Cultural Studies at Leipzig University, the film collection became part of Leipzig University Library's holdings in 2022. The approximately 10,000 films found a new home there and are now available for research and teaching. The DVDs and Blu-rays are currently being recorded for the catalog and are already in high demand at the lending desk.

The funding was supported by the specialist information service (FID) for media, communication and film studies, FID Media. It is one of 40 specialized information services in Germany and is located at Leipzig University Library. The FID adlr.link serves the special needs of its nationwide scientific community with a service portal independent of location.
