Photography has influenced mankind from the year it was born until today. It has radically changed human perception, played an essential role in collective memory, contributed greatly to everyday life and the culture of remembrance, made an indisputable contribution to history and "historiography", enriched the press, public relations, literature (travelogues, reports, etc.), art and science. What's more, photography has become indispensable for culture and the art scene. Photography has also given mankind a new art: the art of cinema. Without photography, the art of cinema could not exist. Some countries have even declared photography to be a "national art". Since its invention until today, many studios, galleries and museums have been founded worldwide and the number is constantly growing. It is clear that digitalization has changed the social, cultural and scientific role of photography. Or rather, photography has expanded its fields. Many areas of life would be unimaginable without photography. It has not become less important through digitalization, but even more important and even more democratic: Anyone can now take photographs. Photography remains a special discipline for art and culture, which is why the number of institutions in the field of photography has increased 5 to 10-fold in the last 20-30 years. Unfortunately not in the Bremen region and surrounding areas. The "Center of Photography" (ZeDeFo) wants to fill this "gap" in Bremen and the entire northwest from 2023 and be "an island for photography". The center aims to bring the medium of photography closer to people as art and culture, making it popular and enriching everyday life. It wants to use the means of photography to make a contribution to socio-culture, peaceful coexistence, "creativity and culture in everyday life", promote the "democratization of culture", advocate civic participation and make a contribution to the entire art and culture scene, but not only in Bremen, the surrounding area and in Germany. The following additional goals are particularly important for the "Center of Photography": 1. to enable citizens from all walks of life to participate in culture and art through the means of photography. Especially young people and new citizens who have little or no access to culture and art. 2. "Center of Photography" wants to become a platform for young photographers living in Bremen and the surrounding area. 3. "Zentrum der Fotografie" wants to make a contribution to integration. 4. zeDeFo wants to make a contribution to international dialog through the medium of photography.
