The Rhineland Architecture Forum was founded in mid-1996
with the idea of bringing together building culture partner institutions in Cologne and beyond and promoting awareness of the history, present and future of planning and building in the Rhineland among the general public. The aim was to preserve and communicate the culture of building and planning in the Rhineland by collecting and processing pre- and posthumous estates, publications, exhibitions and events on the history and continuity of the designed environment.
In addition to publications and exhibitions, the thematic annual programs were and are the most important part of the association's public relations work in order to provide interested urban society with opportunities for information and exchange about the history, present and future of building culture in the Rhineland. In the meantime, the AFR has pursued its motto in 23 annual programs with around 230 public and free events:
> Know the past, understand the present, shape the future <
These annual programs will be looked at in 2026 and individual topics from them will be used to examine what has happened since then in planning, building and design in the Rhineland.
