Alongside the Aalto Music Theater, the Aalto Ballet Essen, the Essen Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philharmonie, Schauspiel Essen is one of the five divisions of Theater und Philharmonie Essen GmbH (TUP). A total of 700 employees work at TUP - making it one of the largest theater companies in Germany. Schauspiel Essen is one of the most renowned municipal theaters in North Rhine-Westphalia with repertory operations and employs a permanent ensemble of 17. The main venue of Schauspiel Essen is the Grillo Theater in the heart of downtown Essen, which was built in 1892 as one of the first theaters in the Ruhr region by middle-class owners. In addition, there are the Casa and Box venues as well as the Heldenbar and Café Central for smaller theater formats.

Since 2010, Schauspiel Essen has been led by artistic director Christian Tombeil. Aesthetically and formally, the program reflects the current tendencies of contemporary theatrical creation through a variety of different directorial signatures. With its repertoire, the artistic direction is concerned to take up contemporary and virulent topics and at the same time not to lose sight of the entertainment aspect of theater.
