Diana Schulz

In the artist's words:

Diana Schulz has been a graduate and master student at the Düsseldorf Art Academy since 2017, as well as organizer of a renowned and popular nude course in Düsseldorf.

She was born in Kyrgyzstan in 1987 and grew up in Cologne. From 2008, she studied first with Professor Grünfeld and then with Professor Anzinger at the Düsseldorf Art Academy.

In her drawings, she goes far beyond ordinary, simply descriptive depictions and explores the space between physical and spiritual existence. She skillfully employs the entire range of representational techniques, from simple pencil sketches to elaborate watercolors.

Characteristic is her unpolished, truly beautiful style of representation, which opposes a too simple, meaningless complaisance.

Her sculptural formal language captures the dynamic character of human existence with its constant change, an oscillation, as it were, between states of being, between light and shadow, now and then.

What is particularly remarkable here is the value- and judgment-free observation of the object itself, which allows her a surprising and haunting interpretation.

The exciting conquest of three-dimensionality within the framework of the relief or bas-relief enables her to fathom human worlds of being in an even clearer, more exciting way. At the same time, she remains unmistakably and never boringly true to her style.

The synthesis of classical relief with modern materials and unusual colors embodies the field of tension of today's human existence between primeval human instinctuality, classical high culture and constant technical evolution. With this new technique, her brilliant depictions enter another dimension.
