Maria Wallenstål-Schoenberg's paintings have a distinctly positive aura. They combine intuition and reason to create a balanced interplay of sensual color contrasts and precisely conceived geometric forms. In the tradition of concrete art, these works are not abstract in the true sense of the word: they do not abstract anything representational, but make mental orders vivid and thus concrete.

The interplay of geometric form and pure color is at the heart of his artistic interest. In a lengthy working process, Wallenstål-Schoenberg develops her paintings with oil paint and a palette knife on the canvas - a process whose creation can be traced step by step in the finished work. The colors are applied in several layers in a spontaneous, lively style, with the penultimate layer shining through again and again. These layers of paint emerge particularly at the edges of the geometric forms.

In this way, the strict boundaries between the individual areas of color dissolve and are transformed into transitional zones of intense painterly presence. The sculptural relief of the paint reinforces this impression: it makes color and form tangible and creates subtle light and shadow effects on the surface of the painting. Ultimately, it is the colors of intense luminosity that make Maria Wallenstål-Schoenberg's paintings a thoroughly sensual experience.
