What can classical music do today? The treppenausorchester has been working on an expanded concept of the concert for several years. With a playful research drive, it explores the boundaries of the live concert situation, opening doors to new listening experiences, intimate moments and unexpected content. Concert as an experience. Classical music as performance. Always with surprising connections to our reality.

The multi-award-winning 20-piece ensemble is one of the leading representatives of the innovative classical music scene in Germany and Europe. It researches new concert formats, often together with video artists, directors, actors and composers, in its laboratory city of Hanover and maintains several concert series of its own in its Hanover and Hamburg locations. With its format developments such as KULT, DARK ROOM, DARK RIDE, INNER JOURNEY, HYGGE, DATE DEINE MUSIK, NOTFALLKONZERTE, DISCO or CIRCLING REALITIES, the ensemble is regularly invited to national and international venues and festivals, such as the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Istanbul Music Festival, Við Djúpið Festival Iceland, Rheingau Music Festival, Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, Alte Oper Frankfurt, Kölner Philharmonie, Philharmonie Essen, Konzerthaus Dortmund, Mozartfest Würzburg, Carinthischer Sommer, Heidelberger Frühling, Thüringer Bachtage, Podium Festival Esslingen, Beethovenfest Bonn, Detect Festival and the Fusion Festival.

Since 2020, the orchestra has also organized the month-long SEA SOUNDS festival on the North Sea island of Norderney every year and the treppenhausfestival in Hanover and Hamburg every three years.

In its large community platform treppenhauscloud, it has been offering a variety of participation formats, community music, education projects, workshops and developments for special target groups since 2025, and is strongly committed to social and cultural policy with many other impulses.

In 2021, the treppenhausorchester was awarded the perspective prize of the German theater prize DER FAUST.
