You don’t always need sunshine to have a great time in the summer of 2026. Events and venues that let you take a breather—where you can forget about the heat wave for a few hours—are worth their weight in gold. Don’t underestimate the dangers of direct sunlight when temperatures are very high. Take care of yourself and your body, drink plenty of water, and don’t forget your sunscreen and a hat when you head outside! 👒
Frequently Asked Questions About the 2026 Heat Wave in Germany
How hot will the summer of 2026 be in Germany?
The summer of 2026 in Germany could be really intense: temperatures of 30 degrees and higher are not uncommon. On some days, temperatures have even exceeded 40 degrees. In cities, the so-called heat island effect can make it feel even hotter than in rural areas. It’s best to check the weather forecast regularly so you’re well prepared.
How can I protect myself from the heat on hot days?
The most important thing: drink plenty of fluids! At least 1.5 to 2 liters of water a day—more if you're out and about. Light-colored, loose-fitting clothing, a hat, and sunscreen with a high SPF also help. If possible, try to spend the hottest hours of the day indoors or in the shade.
When is the sun most dangerous in the summer?
UV radiation in Germany is generally strongest between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. During this time, the risk of sunburn and heat-related illness is highest. Especially on days with heat waves, it’s best to schedule activities and outings for the early morning or late evening hours and avoid the midday heat.
What is a heat wave, and when does it become dangerous?
A heat wave is defined as a period during which temperatures remain significantly above the seasonal average for several days—in Germany, this is often defined as temperatures of 30 degrees or higher for at least three consecutive days. The situation becomes particularly stressful when the nights bring little relief—so-called tropical nights with temperatures above 20 degrees. Older adults, children, and people with pre-existing medical conditions are then at particular risk.
