What's happening on May 01? - Events in Leipzig
May Day in Leipzig is one of those things. Officially it's called Labor Day, but for most of us it's the exact opposite: sleeping in, going somewhere nice, a cold drink in your hand, and then maybe dancing in the evening, even though you swore in the morning that you'd go to bed early tonight. You know what I mean. 🕺
And that's exactly what makes May Day in Leipzig so good: the city simply does everything at the same time on this day. Demonstrations and rallies on the one hand, street parties and courtyard festivals on the other, families with coffee-to-go in Clara Zetkin Park, people with beer crates on the Sachsenbrücke, a concert somewhere, a rave somewhere, art somewhere, a flea market somewhere. You just have to decide which version of Leipzig you want to live in that day. 🤔
If you're new to the city and wondering what to do in Leipzig on May 1st: welcome, you've picked a good day to find out. If you've been here for a while and every year you think "I should actually do something other than sit on the same bank with the same three people" - also good, because in this article we've put together a few events for May 1st with something for almost every type of day. 🤝
From early to late, from outdoors to indoors, from "I want to be with people" to "I want to be with people, but with bass speakers please".

Frequently asked questions
Is May 1 a public holiday in Leipzig?
Yes, May 1st is a public holiday throughout Germany, including Saxony and Leipzig. This means that most people have the day off, many stores stay closed and you can spend the whole day outside without feeling guilty. In 2026, May 1 falls on a Friday - so you automatically get a long weekend as a gift.
Are stores in Leipzig open on May 1?
Rather no. Because May 1st is a public holiday in Saxony, most stores are closed. Supermarkets, drugstores, fashion stores: closed. Cafés, bars, restaurants and Spätis are usually open, plus the travel stores in the promenades at the main station between 1 and 6 pm. So you'd better do your shopping on April 30, otherwise it'll be a sprint to the station.
Will streetcars and buses be running in Leipzig on May 1?
Yes, the LVB runs, but according to the Sunday and public holiday timetable. This means less frequent service than on a normal working day. Plan a little more buffer, especially if you want to get to a demonstration or a street festival and want to arrive on time. It's best to check current connections shortly beforehand in the LeipzigMOVE app.
What's going on in Leipzig on May 1?
Quite a lot. Traditionally, the day starts with the DGB demonstration from the Volkshaus in Karl-Liebknecht-Straße to the market square, where a large rally with information stands, music and a program for families takes place from midday. There will also be courtyard festivals, street parties, open-air festivals, concerts, flea markets and parties all over the city. You can find out which specific events we recommend in the main section above or on our socials.
Why is May 1 a public holiday at all?
In brief: May 1 is International Workers' Day and historically dates back to workers' struggles in Chicago in the late 19th century, including for the eight-hour day. This is why trade unions, political parties and political groups still take to the streets on this day. This is particularly visible in Leipzig: a lot happens politically between Karli, Markt, Südplatz and Connewitz.
What do I do on May 1 in Leipzig if I don't feel like demonstrating?
Also completely legitimate. Find a park (Clara-Zetkin-Park, Rosental, Auensee), a meadow by the Weiße Elster or a courtyard festival in your neighborhood. The beer gardens are traditionally packed on this day, and many clubs run an extended program from Friday evening into the weekend. May Day in Leipzig doesn't mean that you have to be political, just that you can't really make the day boring.
Is May Day in Leipzig worthwhile for tourists and newcomers?
Very. If you want to experience a cross-section of the city: politics, culture, party people, families, pensioners with handcarts, all in one day, May 1st is probably the best date for it. Put on comfortable shoes and let yourself drift.
