Quarter favorites: Westend
The Westend has always had a reputation for being up and coming. We think that the Westend is already good anyway. Here are our favorite stores, cafés, restaurants, bars and green spaces in the district.
Food & drink
RestaurantHeldenspeisen
80339 München
When it comes to good salad bars, there is one address in Munich that should not be missed, and that is Heldenspeisen. This small store is hidden away at Heimeranstraße 49, where sisters Barbara and Veronika Held delight you with homemade salads on weekdays. Behind the counter, you can choose between delicious creations such as fennel salad with oranges, dates and almond slivers or mountain lentils with caramelized apples. In addition to extremely creative salads, Heldenspeisen also has a menu of the day that includes soup, dal or a stew. And there's always quiche too. Cakes and pastries are also available for those with a sweet tooth!
sehrwohl Café & Bar
A place where you can combine cake with Prosecco is very well located on the corner of Westendstraße and Schrenkstraße. This fine place is a café and bar in equal measure and also has a heavenly sun terrace under a tree. A stronghold for all day-drinking lovers, so to speak! But now back to the culinary side of things: In addition to sweet treats and a generous breakfast and brunch at the weekend, the restaurant also offers hearty dishes such as artichoke salad with sun-dried tomatoes, spinach and walnut quiche or goat's cheese and honey tartlets with pear chutney, olives and caper apples. Mmmh!
bodhi
Out and about in the Westend with a vegan appetite? How about crispy steak in dark beer sauce? Wild mushroom ragout or hearty stuffed roulades? Yes, you heard right! All of this is available 100% animal-free at bodhi. The most popular Bavarian delicacies are served here in a cozy pub atmosphere. It not only tastes authentic, but also really good. And for those who prefer something a little less savory: Kaiserschmarrn or yeast dumplings are always a good choice.
L‘Oca Bianca
80336 München
Sophisticated Venetian appetizers called cicchetti, accompanied by good wine - including frizzante - and followed by a fresh tiramisu dello chef with a great espresso. All of this and homemade Italian delicacies await you at L'Oca Bianca on Schwanthalerhöhe, and if you've never heard of the term cicchetti before, don't worry, we had to google it. Cicchetti are Venetian starters. They are based on toasted or untoasted bread or polenta slices. They are topped with seafood, fish, meat, sausage, cheese, bacon, creams or vegetables.
Schwarzer Dackel
80339 München
The Schwarze Dackel has everything you need for a good bar night: fancy cocktails, fresh beers on tap, a small selection of bar food and good music. The charming bar in the Westend even goes one better, however, as it has a shuffleboard. You know, the game where discs with long wooden sticks have to be pushed as accurately as possible from the starting line to the opposite target field on an elongated playing field. Never heard of it? Then all the more reason to pay the dachshund a visit.
Kilombo
If you long for a simple pub atmosphere in the Westend, Kilombo is the place for you. Here you will be transported back to the 60s in terms of furniture and music. Generally speaking, things are very uncomplicated at Kilombo. If you feel hungry, you can bring your own food or take something away from one of the surrounding restaurants and eat it in the pub. Thanks to our restaurant tips in the article, you now have a wide choice.
bnb – Banh Mi & Beer
80339 München
Banh Mi and beer sound like a stable combination to you? There is a restaurant of the same name in the Westend on Parkstraße. Even banh mi connoisseurs are in for another surprise here, as you can put together your own banh mi if you wish. You can choose toppings such as omelette or French processed cheese. So if you want to try something other than the classic banh mi with beef or tofu, bnb is the place for you. Half a Banh Mi costs 4.30 euros and a whole one 7.30. Depending on the topping, you add 50 cents (half) or 1 euro (whole).
Pizzesco
81669 München
Word of the thin and juicy pizzas from Pizzesco am Gasteig has certainly gotten around. But did you also know that there is a Pizzesco Sprint in Westend? Sprint, not because you can gobble it down quickly, but rather take it with you quickly. Because there are no seats here. The special thing about Pizzesco in general: it's a kind of pizza heaven for allergy sufferers. Kamut wheat or spelt flour is used for the gluten-free pizzas. Gluten-free and authentic Italian are therefore not a contradiction in terms! So treat yourself to a classic or one of the unusual varieties - for example the potato pizza. Mmmmh!
Ladencafé Marais
80339 München
The Marais shop-café is - as the name suggests - a French-inspired café and store in one. (Almost) everything you find here can also be bought: Furniture, jewelry, children's things and even cosmetics. Thanks to the 1920s inventory, we always feel a bit like we're in an antique store with a very high feel-good factor. The menu is also impressive: there are homemade cakes such as gateau au chocolat or tarte tatin, various panini, a soup of the day and, of course, croissants for breakfast. Pack a book and soak up the lovely atmosphere in the café.
Lohner & Grobitsch
80339 München
Are you hungry but not in a restaurant mood? Then we recommend a stop at Café Lohner and Grobtisch. When we say that the atmosphere here is wonderfully relaxed, we mean it in the very best sense of the word. The café offers delicious breakfasts such as scrambled eggs or pancakes in the morning, a changing weekly menu with hot dishes at lunchtime and coffee and cake in between. A fun fact at the end: While Café Marais serves with a textile past, Lohner & Grobitsch was a grocery store for over 40 years.
Shopping & strolling
StoreWeißer Rabe
80339 München
Are you in the process of refurnishing your home? Then you should make a detour to the Weißer Raben second-hand store. Here you'll find everything from furniture and crockery to books, decorations and textiles. You can also get your hands on electrical appliances, all of which have been inspected by the staff. With your purchase, you are not only doing something good for your wallet and the environment, but also supporting long-term unemployed people, whom the Weiße Rabe supports and employs as one of the largest inclusion and employment companies in Upper Bavaria.
heißeliebe
What do we feel hot love for? The concept store of the same name in Parkstraße at number four - including owner Phaedra. Here you'll find the sweetest things for your home and closet: ceramic tiles, candles, prints, socks, fair shirts & hoodies, books and much more. Bring time with you, because there is a lot to discover. And if you have any questions, ask the owner Phaedra - not only will she help you, she also knows lots of interesting things about the more than 60 small labels that you can now discover at heißenliebe.
Tischerie
80339 München
Do you need more dried flowers in your life? Then Tischerie is the right place for you, because the selection of dried flowers of all kinds is particularly large here. In addition to dried and cut flowers, you will also find houseplants, succulents, cacti and flower pots in a wide range of colors and sizes.
Lono vegan deli
80339 München
Vegan can be very simple - as the Lono Vegan Deli proves. The market in Kazmaierstraße, which specializes in vegan food, is a real enrichment for all vegans and those who enjoy seitan & co in their food. The range includes staple foods, daily fresh fruit & vegetables, cheese and baked goods. At the counter you will also find various homemade meals and snacks, as well as fresh juices and smoothies to take away.
Stroll & walk
Public SpaceWestpark München
None None
Not an insider tip, but so wonderfully varied that it simply had to be on this list: Westpark. Isn't it in Sendling? Yes, mainly, but it stretches from Schwanthalerhöhe in Westend to Obersendling. So add it to our list! Here you'll find plenty of sunbathing areas, a designated barbecue area, plenty of restaurants offering small takeaway dishes such as Gans am Wasser, a lake, an Asian garden and an open-air cinema(Kino, Mond & Sterne). In other words: a large selection of pretty unique spots and plenty of green space to lounge around.
Georg-Freundorfer-Platz
80339 München
Westend also has an impressive playground with lots of climbing fun and surrounding cafés for all adults. For this you have to go to Georg-Freundorfer-Platz, which is surrounded by Ganghofer-, Kazmair-, Gerolt- and Sandtnerstraße. What you can also find there: Table tennis tables, comfortable benches and enough space in the grass for picnic blankets. And a farmers' market every Thursday from 10 am to 6 pm.
