The story of a woman whose life was probably saved by writing: In her second feature film, Jane Campion tells the life of author Janet Frame, born in 1924, in three chapters, from her angst-ridden childhood to an eight-year stay in a psychiatric ward for alleged schizophrenia to her travels as an adult and her process of self-discovery in an environment of social misunderstanding. The result is an undramatic but exciting portrait of the life of a writer who is portrayed excellently by three actresses at different ages.
