Three Haberer without double bass - a band that acts as a musical problem solver.

Musicians face complex problems, some of which are simply logistical. Where does a band position itself? Where is the band's field of activity? Where and how do I find the right line-up to realize my compositions? When people with a conventional jazz education start writing music, they often have the sound of a conventional jazz band in their ears. A grand piano, a
drums, perhaps a saxophone as a melody instrument and of course the double bass. You would think it would be a matter of course at any music academy to find musicians for such a line-up.
The three musicians, Paul, Alex and Marius, met at the ArtEZ Conservatory in Arnhem in the Netherlands. Paul, a native of Graz, studied jazz violin here for a year as part of the Erasmus program. Marius studied drums and comes from Essen. Alex, born in Gummersbach, studied piano here. A trio formation of colorful mixed origins within the German-speaking world, which immediately got along well both personally and musically. The basic building blocks for a conventional jazz ensemble are now in place. The only thing missing is the double bass. But that's where the challenges begin. There were no double bass students at the ArtEZ in Arnhem at the time. So there was no chance of a classical sound. At this point, the trio decided to turn the problem into an opportunity. The function of the bass at its core is to round off the overall sound by adding low frequencies. So if you can convert one of the given instruments so that it can fulfill this function, you avoid the problem. Paul octaves his violin down two octaves using an effects pedal. Alex uses a Moog synthesizer to cover the lower registers. The two of them take turns playing bass. In effect, you kill two birds with one stone. Not only does this solve the line-up problem, it also results in a special sound that not only sounds traditional, but also innovative. In addition, it also directly covers a third challenge, namely the search for a unique selling point. Because let's be honest, in which band does the violin play bass?
Giving simple answers to complex problems is not always easy, nor is it always desirable. But sometimes the solution is closer than you think. One could draw the conclusion: Innovation occurs when you have to overcome a problem. When you try to make something out of what is given and thus draw new opportunities from the challenge.
