Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was an avid letter writer. They have been preserved in large numbers and offer us an authentic insight into the life and thoughts of this genius of the century. He also writes about the flute quartets, which will be heard in our fourth chamber concert, when he tells his father that he has received a commission from an "Indian Dutchman" for "3 small, light and short concertos and a pair of quattros on the flute". Even though he was unable to fulfill the commission immediately, love and other things got in the way, over time he composed a total of four quartets for flute and three strings. What they all have in common is a wonderful, serenade-like tone that is just right for a balmy spring evening.
