The story of the bird dealer Adam and his bride, the postwoman Christel, has enchanted generations. Carl Zeller's operetta, which premiered in Vienna in 1891, was a worldwide success and melodies such as Schenkt man sich Rosen in Tirol and Ich bin die Christel von der Post have become immortalized in music history. Richard Heuberger's operetta Opernball is a fast-paced comedy of mistaken identity set in Paris at carnival time. Here, two ladies want to put their husbands' fidelity to the test, which, unthinkable today, supposedly falters in the wild carnival hustle and bustle. This is why the evening features an aria that was the height of frivolity in 1898 and is now a first-rate operetta hit: Komm mit mir ins Chambre separée.
