With the exhibition “40219 – A Glimpse in Between,” 15 students from the Department of Design at Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences turn their attention to the neighborhood around Lorettostraße in Düsseldorf-Unterbilk.

A neighborhood tells its story not only through its architecture but is also shaped by the people who live there. Every day, they breathe new life into the neighborhood, leave their mark, tell stories, and make the place what it is. A multifaceted picture emerges amid bustling streets and quiet backyards.

As part of the photography seminar “The Hood – Stories of a Viertel,” 15 students, under the guidance of Nina Ditscheid, developed 14 photographic works and concepts based on intensive research and a personal engagement with the neighborhood. In doing so, they focus on specific places such as bars, shops, or workshops and the people who shape these spaces. Others explore the less visible aspects of the neighborhood, search for clues, and capture their personal perceptions and memories.

The exhibition is an invitation to venture a “glance in between” and rediscover the neighborhood. Familiar places are viewed through a different lens, revealing new perspectives and insights. The works are exhibited at nine different locations around Lorettostraße and are deliberately integrated into the urban space. Storefronts, interiors, and public spaces become exhibition spaces. Those who wish to explore them can join guided tours or discover the locations on their own.

The project is supported by Viertelladen e.V., represented by Klaus Mader, who has established numerous valuable connections and networks.

The students would like to express their sincere thanks to the District Council of District 3 of the state capital Düsseldorf, the Friends of the Design Department at Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences e.V., the companies Canon and Calumet Photo Video, and everyone in the Loretto neighborhood whose stories and dedication made the students’ individual projects possible in the first place.
