21 Songs in a Public Surrounding is a two-part series of pieces by Hannes Seidl.
The first part, Songs 1 - 15, was performed by the ensemble MAM. Manufaktur für aktuelle Musik performed the first part, Songs 1 - 15, in various subway stations across Europe between 2021 and 2024. Over three days, the group's energetic music interrupted the hustle and bustle of everyday life in this underground part of cities. They invited passers-by to engage with the surroundings and their sounds, smells and people and to perceive them in a completely new way. In this sense, the musicians celebrated the moment and life together with the pedestrians, despite and because of all the unfulfilled, unfinished, impossible and possibly embarrassing things that penetrate beneath the surface of the city. This performative intervention in the public space created a special atmosphere.

The second part, which will be performed as part of the 25th anniversary of Edition Juliane Klein, reflects on these various stations. Short anecdotes from the subway stations in Sofia, Belgrade, Vienna and Prague will be heard in a kind of experience report of these journeys, supplemented by recordings of the music from the first part and the sounds of the surroundings. The composer Hannes Seidl will perform six texts live and enhance them with electronic music.
