75 years old, but still up to date - that's the Borbeck Photo Friends. They are celebrating their anniversary with an exhibition at the Städtische Galerie Schloß Borbeck. There, 16 photographers will be presenting their work until Sunday, June 28, from Tuesday to Sunday, 2 pm to 6 pm.
The Borbeck Photo Friends are celebrating their 75th anniversary under the motto "the medium has changed - the joy of photography has remained". Because despite all the technical changes, the person behind the camera is still the most important and decisive element.
It all began 75 years ago when amateur photographer Richard Wagner placed an advertisement in a newspaper looking for like-minded photographers. Under his leadership, the Borbeck Photo Friends were founded in 1951. "The second oldest association in the regional association of Westphalia", as Peter Munsch, Chairman of the DVF regional association of Westphalia, emphasized at the opening.
The photo club soon grew to over 30 members. In 1977, Dieter Weber took over the management and led the club to many successes for over 20 years. In 2005, Günter Schneider took over the management; Martin Sulkowski has held the position of chairman since 2021.
But anyone expecting the exhibition to be a chronicle will be looking in vain. Although the Borbeck Photo Friends have captured countless moments over the past 75 years, building on experience, they consistently live in the present: this is precisely what is reflected in the photos in the exhibition. Each photo tells its own story and shows the individual signature of the photographers.
On display here is the timeless elegance of black and white photography, which focuses on the essentials: Light, shadow and contours. The brilliance and limitless possibilities of modern digital photography can also be experienced.
Early on, the Borbeck Photo Friends were members of the VDAV (Association of German Amateur Photographers), now known as the DVF (German Association for Photography). The members of the Borbecker Fotofreunde regularly take part in national and sometimes international competitions. At the Rhineland Photo Championships, the Borbeck Photo Friends were almost continuously among the first places. The Borbeck Photo Friends also regularly win awards at the German State Photo Championships and the Westphalian State Photo Championships.
The exhibition "75 Years of Borbeck Photo Friends" can be seen until Sunday, June 28. The photo exhibition is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 2 pm to 6 pm. Admission is free of charge.
