9ms is the duo consisting of Munich-based drummers Florian König and Simon Popp. On their
albums *Pleats*, *II*, and *Lunch*, the two musicians delve deeply into poly-
and cross-rhythms, monotony, and sound manipulation. Using analog
transducers and sensors, their movements are used to intuitively derive tempo and
distance information is used to shape the sound. The sensor recordings of their
body movements control the sound parameters of various effects devices such as echo
and reverb units, and dynamics processors. Thanks to this intuitive effect control,
, the interaction between human and machine takes on a new, playful dimension.
With their new album “Lunch,” the pendulum takes center stage as the central conceptual element
: Its steady motion is converted into analog voltage via a gyroscope
and used to control all parameters in the setup. This expands
the system is expanded to include a physical-performative element that reconnects control and chance

On their wide-ranging albums 'Pleats,' 'II,' and 'Lunch,' the tech-savvy
drummers offer grooves from the dub-influenced realms of world music and
Krautrock—some meditative and light, some thick as a wall and steady as a
clock. Using various infrared and magnetic field sensors, Popp and König
were able to translate their movements into control voltage, which they then
used to trigger and tweak synthesizers and a myriad of effects. A way for
two humans to become one with their mystical machinery.
On their current album, *Lunch*, the conceptual centerpiece is the pendulum.
Neither man nor machine, its steady movement is converted into analog
voltage using what is known as a gyroscope, allowing it to trigger and control any
parameter in the duo’s setup.
