"Milonga en Piso Alemán": Black history of the tango
| By Philip Kojo Metz | with the participation of Negar Taymoorzadeh | Music: Abel Momo |
Installation, live music & tango dance evening about the African roots of tango - a multi-layered examination of the colonial past and the transatlantic enslavement trade.
The art project "Milonga en Piso Alemán" by Philip Kojo Metz is a multi-layered examination of history and makes a valuable contribution to the decolonization of memory.
The installation consists of a dance floor that makes a historical location visible: the Ghanaian fortress Groß-Friedrichsburg, a center of human trafficking with German involvement, is spatially cited through it.
The accompanying music program also highlights the black history of tango, which remained invisible for a long time. Negar Tamoorzadeh, who was involved in the preceding research and musical compilation, and Philip Kojo Metz question Eurocentric narratives and make it clear that even seemingly "white" cultural assets such as the tango were shaped by the African diaspora.
"Milonga en Piso Alemán" is therefore more than just a dance event: it is an act of remembrance. In this way, the injustice of that time is overcome and ritualized - with dignity, awareness and collective strength. Dancing is expressly encouraged!
Negar Taymoorzadeh & Philip Kojo Metz are curators, artists and conceptual team of "Milonga en Piso Alemán" and deal with postcolonial narratives and artistic culture of remembrance.
Abel Momo is a musician and researcher who focuses on Afro-diasporic music and history.
