Robert Wolfgang Segel lets his Alice mature into a demagogic anti-Alice, who embarks on a wild downward trip down the rabbit hole of right-wing potentates. In this wounded land, Alice encounters a society that deceives itself, caught somewhere between political slumber and frenetic right-wing applause. It blocks escape routes, transforms playgrounds into battlefields, sends a clear message to the harbingers of bans, and discovers a surprising amount of greatness—or a surprising amount of small-mindedness—in the narrow-minded. Past mythical creatures and the downright impossible, the reader encounters not only the limping Queen of Hearts, the advice-giving Caterpillar, the inedible Cheshire Cat, and the tea-drinking Hatter, who can’t bring himself to make a decision. Fortunately for the endangered realm of fantasy, new ideas for peaceful coexistence are sprouting from the sparse but increasingly wildly flourishing vines of resistance. Lewis Carroll meets the hesitant contemporary Federal Republic of Germany; the familiar characters from Carroll’s dream saga take on a new interpretation—witty, sharp-tongued, and highly topical.
