Today's taz Talk "Alles Osten? Why then?" is unfortunately canceled due to illness. Jens Bisky has promised to make up for the talk on another occasion.

The "East" - never before have the political and cultural conditions in the East German states that used to make up the GDR been so much under discussion as this year. And this is due to the presumably rapidly growing success of one party - the AfD.

The "East" in general is the subject of heated debate: What has gone wrong there since the fall of the walls 35 years ago? But isn't it all just political projections in a country that, regardless of its GDR legacy, doesn't know any resilient ways out of many crises?

East meets West: A taz Talk with author Jens Bisky and taz editor Jan Feddersen. Both ask: Is it still worth talking about the "East" at all - and if so, by whom?

Jens Bisky, born in Leipzig in 1966, is a bestselling author, including a book on the history of Berlin, was editor of the Berliner Zeitung and Süddeutsche Zeitung for many years - and now works at the Hamburg Institute for Social Research, where he is responsible for the online platform Soziopolis and the magazine Mittelweg 36, among other things.
