Alte Weihnachtslieder Neu - Christian Steyer & Der Berliner Solistenchor

The *Dresdner Neueste Nachrichten* ran the headline: “Christian Steyer manages to get people to sing in a way they themselves would hardly have thought possible”; the *Sächsische Zeitung* wrote “Surprise and goosebumps”; and the *TAZ* concluded with “Unique on the German music scene.” Founded by actor, composer, and narrator Christian Steyer, his ensemble,Der Berliner Solistenchor, is celebrating its 26th concert season with seven performances. 

While exploring old Christmas carols, Steyer noticed how often they are trivialized and reduced to clichés, so he decided to counter these stereotypes with something of his own. Through a highly personal arrangement of the songs, he sought to bring out their immense musical and thematic potential and create a full-length song cycle to be performed by an extraordinary choir that transcends the classical framework.

In the songs he selected for the concert cycle*Alte Weihnachtslieder Neu* (OldChristmas Carols,New), he sees a connection to our lives, but also to myths rooted in many cultures. “These songs convey a universal principle of life: that through a less-than-pleasant experience, one can emerge from darkness into light and discover something unexpected.” 

By carefully incorporating elements from various genres, he has transformed well-known Christmas carols into a sonic marvel for choir and piano. A refreshing change from the usual jingle-jangle of the Advent season and a delight for lovers of both modern and classical music alike. Anyone who hears him perform with his ensemble can feel it: the pulsating energy of old German Christmas carols.
