Amy Jade Winehouse, born on September 14, 1983 in Southgate, London, signed her first record deal at the age of 19 and released her first single "Stronger Than Me" in 2003 as well as her debut album "Frank", which reached number 3 in the UK album charts and gave her her national breakthrough. In 2006, at the age of 23, she catapulted to the top of the world charts with her second studio album "Back to Black" and attracted media attention with her musical and visual transformation. "Back to Black" stormed to number one in the charts in 20 countries and sold over 1.5 million copies in the year of its release, while Amy made the typical retro look of the 1960s and the beehive hairstyle her trademark. This was followed by countless chart placings, prestigious awards and a worldwide wave of enthusiasm with sold-out and highly acclaimed concert and TV appearances. In 2007, Amy Winehouse was the highest-earning woman in British show business.

The dark side of success: from global fame to "Club 27"

In the course of her international breakthrough, Winehouse struggled with mental health problems and drug abuse. Her ex-husband confessed that he had introduced Amy to hard drugs and repeatedly prevented her from attending rehab. After the separation in 2008, she managed to get off hard drugs, but the mental health problems and alcohol abuse remained and worsened during her detox period. She suffered from bulimia and her father confirmed press reports of self-harming behavior. Her health problems and unstable condition led to the termination and cancellation of many concerts and tours, and comeback attempts failed. On July 23, 2011, Amy Winehouse was found dead with 4.16 per mille in her blood.
