As part of the seminar "Film and Women's Rights in India and Pakistan", we are showing the award-winning drama Joyland (Pakistan, 2022), a powerful film about gender roles, identity and the courage to question social norms. The film is set in modern-day Lahore and tells the story of the Rana family, which is strongly influenced by patriarchal structures. The focus is on Haider, the youngest son, who secretly accepts a job in a dance theater and falls in love with the self-confident trans woman Biba. This encounter not only shakes up his own life, but also fundamentally questions the values and expectations of his family.

Background:

The film will be followed by a discussion to create space for an exchange about human rights and LGBTQIA* rights and the situation of women in India and Pakistan.
