About the Residency
How can art bring neighbors together and foster a lasting sense of solidarity?
“With this central question, we aim to explore how artistic interventions in Jungbusch can bring neighbors, institutions, and audiences into relationship with one another. The focus is on developing a music and storytelling performance that will be implemented in Jungbusch as a unifying social practice—in times of digital isolation, increasing pressure to self-optimize, authoritarian policies, and social fragmentation.
The festival explores spaces and practices for a new way of living together.Analog Assemblies – Jungbuschaddresses precisely this issue: Many people are experiencing how the social infrastructure of their neighborhoods seems to be slowly dissolving—spaces for encounter are becoming scarcer, and familiar places are being displaced. The loss of communal infrastructure jeopardizes the social networks that make living together possible. Our project responds to this with a deliberate focus on analog presence and collective action. The goal of our performance is not to create an event designed primarily for consumption, but to foster lasting connections.
“Analog Assemblies – Jungbusch”is designed as an open, evolving format. Music, storytelling, and interpersonal encounters intertwine to form a collaborative work. We work in a process-oriented and site-specific manner: the Jungbusch neighborhood becomes an artistic and social space of resonance. Rehearsals are not closed off but are intentionally open and accessible, so that neighbors are invited to participate, watch, or simply be present.” /Laila Mahmoud and Vincent Bababoutilabo
About the Artists
At the heart of the project is Laila Mahmoud, a musician based in Mannheim. She is an active member of the board of the Dialograum Kultur Rhein-Neckar association, plays in numerous ensembles, and studied music and music education at the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg in Mannheim as well as in Homs, Syria. She is accompanied by the band Rosa Shakur, led by musician Vincent Bababoutilabo. He is an artist and author living in Berlin and Zwingenberg (Bergstraße). Thanks to the Schwindelfrei Festival, he produced his first audio walk as part of a collective in 2020. His works include, among others, the audio walk “zurückERZÄHLT,” which won first place at the audiowalk awards in 2022, as well as the album “Rosa Shakur” by the band of the same name.
