Prof. Andreas Kaiser used a research semester to learn and apply the centuries-old Japanese ink painting technique "Sumi-e". This involves rubbing black rod ink with a few drops of water on a slate stone and then applying it with a brush to unglued Japanese paper made from bast fibers. Sumi-e masters pass this knowledge on to their students. Kaiser went to Berlin to study with the only German sumi-e master, Rita Böhm. At the age of 86, she receives her students in her own studio. After learning the technique, Kaiser traveled on to Japan to study original painting there. He is now showing the results of his studies in an extensive exhibition.
