Anna and Nellie Thalbach desperately need something to laugh about

In the Thalbach family, you don’t go to the basement to laugh—you go on stage. In their new live show, Anna and Nellie seek out the humor in literature—from Max Goldt to Jonathan Swift. Amid dry commentary and surprisingly offbeat mini-skits, they also tackle the age-old question of why we actually laugh—and when we’d rather not. And in between, they share their absolute favorite jokes.

Sometimes subtle, sometimes completely off the mark, but guaranteed never boring. An evening somewhere between a reading, stand-up, and controlled chaos.

Anna Thalbach, born in 1973 in East Berlin, is a theater and film actress and one of Germany’s most sought-after audiobook narrators. In 2008, she received the German Audiobook Prize, and in 2011, the Ohrkanus Award for Best Narrator. On the big screen, she has appeared in nationally and internationally successful productions, including “Burning Life,” “The Baader Meinhof Complex,” and alongside Keira Knightley and Viggo Mortensen in David Cronenberg’s “A Dangerous Method” (2010). Anna Thalbach has been honored with the German Television Award, among other accolades.

Nellie Thalbach, born in Berlin in 1995, is an actress and the youngest member of the Thalbach theater family. She made her theater debut as early as 2002 at the Maxim Gorki Theater as Little Polly in “The Threepenny Opera.” In 2005, she appeared on camera for the first time alongside Katharina Thalbach and Götz George in “Maria Callas.” She is the voice and face of the podcast “Echt krank!” and gives readings on stage and narrates audiobooks.
