In the Brazilian state of Pará, where the forests are burning due to the growing soy monocultures and nature is being devoured by capitalism, the ensemble of the Ghent City Theater meets members of the Movement of Soilless Workers (MST) to develop an allegorical play: Antigone, Sophocles' tragedy about the conflict between state power and inner truth, here becomes a confrontation between the overpowering neoliberal system and the claim to a life in balance between man and nature.
In this fascinating work between moving tragedy transcription and informative documentary theater, activists comment on the stage action between Creon, Antigone, her fiancé Haimon and his mother Eurydice as a chorus of the landless from a huge video wall.
As the final part of his Antiquity trilogy, which began with "Orest in Mosul" (2020 at the Lessing Festival), director Milo Rau tells the tragic story of right and wrong as a bloody clash between traditional wisdom and turbo-capitalism.
