With*Mirrorball*, the Weserburg Museum of Modern Artpresentsthe first solo museum exhibition by Anys Reimann (*1965, Düsseldorf*). In her works, the artist explores the tension between identity and the body, and between cultural belonging and representation. She is best known for her portraits of Black women: self-assured, multifaceted, and challenging all at once. Reimann counters Western colonial perspectives with her own distinctive visual worlds. Her works celebrate the hybrid and the ambiguous. In doing so, she skillfully weaves together fragments from art history, film, music, fashion, and literature into a vibrant, contemporary mythology. Icons and outsiders, queer visual languages, and a resistant Black pop culture are ever-present.
The exhibition in Bremen offers a comprehensive insight into Reimann’s most recent work: large-format collage paintings, enigmatic leather sculptures, mirror objects, and body casts with clenched fists. Many works are designed to engage multiple senses. In addition to the visual, scent and touch play an essential role. Among other things, a scent sculpture is part of the exhibition. Scents such as patchouli, incense, wood, and herbs play an important role for the artist. They are closely linked to memories that Reimann evokes in her works, thereby bringing the personal and the universal together.
For*Mirrorball*, several new works are being created, including a black garden in the museum—a walk-through installation in the form of an archipelago featuring plants with exclusively black blooms, a sensual, almost unreal biotope, olfactorily enriched specifically for this location.
