Architektur Sommer: Kanutour: Hamburg Sustainability Week

The east of Hamburg offers a lot of potential for urban development: on a canoe tour, BOOT e.V. takes a look at large, previously little-used areas of water in an urban area undergoing change. The "city tour by hand" combines insights into the city's history with current urban planning issues. Participation for 27 people, duration approx. 2.5 hours.

Background: With the third master plan "Stromaufwärts an Elbe und Bille" (2015), the districts from Hammerbrook to Billstedt moved more into the focus of urban development. BOOT e.V., with its site at Osterbrookplatz, is right in the middle of it all - an ideal starting point for exploring the Lower Bille and its canals, which have so far been little used for recreational sports.

BOOT e.V. has developed from a residents' initiative into a versatile player in urban culture and development. The association runs a café on the publicly accessible site and offers canoe hire and low-threshold, free cultural activities:

Its self-image includes the sustainable use of water and other resources as well as teaching safety on the water.

The association sees itself as part of a "grassroots urban development" that seeks answers to the challenges of climate change. The tour "with muscle power" along the Lower Bille and its canals shows how this place on the water was built and how it continues to grow.

The tour will be led by Stefan Malzkorn (BOOT e.V.); there will be an opportunity for questions afterwards. The tour will be held in English.

2. Three large crew boats will be used; can also be done without previous experience.
3. Please bring weatherproof clothing and spare clothes. The tour will also take place in the rain.
