Temporary Uses in Downtown Munich - Part 3

This ARCHITECTURE AND ART Walkshop once again focuses on the topic of temporary cultural uses, which is important for Munich. This refers to the temporary, creative use of buildings or spaces between their original purpose and a new use, in order to prevent vacancy and revitalize the city center.

Our first stop is the Sammlung Goetz / Schaufenster in the Neue Maxburg, a significant postwar building designed by Sep Ruf and Theo Pabst in 1957. The “Schaufenster” exhibition space on Pacellistraße serves as a temporary use until the main building in Oberföhring, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, reopens. The name refers both to the location and to the curatorial concept. In conversation with Karsten Löckemann, chief curator of the Goetz Collection, we’ll learn more about the idea behind it and the current exhibition, “Sterling Ruby,” which opens on July 16.

Afterward, we walk across Karlsplatz (Stachus) into the southern station district. At Landwehrstraße 48, in the Münchner Wohnen building, the temporary space “rezeptfrei” is located on the ground floor of a former pharmacy.

Münchner Wohnen is making the vacant spaces available to the artist duo Kai Roman Kiklas and Max Weisthoff as a temporary exhibition space, thereby contributing to the cultural revitalization of the neighborhood. On display are works spanning architecture, drawing, sculpture, and performance, complemented by rotating exhibitions and open-format events.

Stop 1: Goetz Collection / Storefront, Pacellistraße 5
Station 2: “rezeptfrei,” Landwehrstraße 48
