The curiosity of German diplomats, travelers and adventurers is great when they set foot on Korean soil for the first time at the end of the 19th century. The desire to get to know the country, long known only as a "closed kingdom," is also great.
From the hitherto little-known Korea collection of the Ethnological Museum, the new special exhibition Ari-Arirang. Korea - Fascination for a Closed Kingdom (Oct. 13, 2023 to April 20, 2024) presents a selection of objects that testify to Germany's interest in and fascination with Korea since the 1870s. Today, Korea's culture continues to fascinate here in Germany, and people from Korea look here with equal curiosity. Learn about the peculiarities and characteristics of Korean art and culture on this guided tour with curator Maria Sobotka.
The title of the exhibition quotes the Korean folk song "Arirang," which is associated with feelings of home and longing, and of which historical recordings are in the museum's archives and can be heard in the exhibition. Discover the fascinating culture of Korea in a curatorial tour.
