Arno Surminski had to flee East Prussia as an eleven-year-old boy in 1945; his parents were deported to the Soviet Union, where they later died. His literary work is characterized by reconciliation and a culture of remembrance that focuses on people. The new stories in "Als die Stadt brannte" are exemplary of what literature can show in the face of war terror and expulsion: the many facets of the suffering that so many have to endure.
