Arnold Böcklin. Fantastische Welten
In the organizer's words:
In this major anniversary year honoring the Swiss-born artist Arnold Böcklin (1827–1901), Darmstadt kicks off a series of exhibitions in Berlin, Leipzig, and Basel.
As one of the leading painters of Symbolism, Arnold Böcklin had a decisive influence on German art in the second half of the 19th century. However, fame came to him only late in life.
Thanks to a donation by the industrialist Maximilian von Heyl and his wife in 1924, the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt possesses an outstanding collection of Böcklin’s paintings as well as more than 60 drawings from its graphic arts collection. Supplemented by high-caliber loans from renowned museums such as the Kunstmuseum Basel, the Museum of Fine Arts in Leipzig, the Alte Nationalgalerie – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, the Museum Folkwang in Essen, and the Von der Heydt Museum in Wuppertal, the exhibition offers a presentation of exceptional quality and depth—a constellation not seen in Darmstadt for over five decades.
The exhibition opens up new perspectives on Böcklin’s Symbolist art. It sheds light on his position between Historicism and the beginnings of Modernism and examines the ambivalent reception of his work, which persists to this day. What social ideas are reflected in his paintings? And why are these ideas regaining relevance in a present marked by uncertainty and upheaval?
The special exhibition is a collaboration with the Museum of Fine Arts in Leipzig.
The exhibition is held under the patronage of Her Excellency Livia Leu, Swiss Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany.
