The Hungarian Jew Saul Ausländer is part of the so-called "Sonderkommando" in the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. His job is to lead his fellow prisoners into the gas chambers and then burn their corpses. When Saul believes he recognizes his son in a boy who has been killed, he decides to give the child a funeral according to Jewish tradition. His search for a rabbi takes him to the various sections of the camp as he continues to work within the machinery of extermination.
