Artist Talk: Mauro Barreto (USA)

In the organizer's words:

Following the finissage of our current exhibition "Space as Place", the US-American photographer Mauro Barreto will present some of his portrait works and provide an insight into his artistic work in an artist talk.

Mauro Antonio Barreto will talk about how he fuses social media, chance and improvisation, melodrama and anachronism, mumblecore film and shoegaze music to create portraits of young people that blur the boundaries between fact and fiction. In conjunction with his lecture, Barreto will present a large-scale portrait, Addie and Josh, as a one-day pop-up and sign copies of his latest zine, Endless Bummer (2023).

About the artist:
Mauro Antonio Barreto is a photographer based in Nashville, Tennessee (USA). He has presented his work in solo exhibitions at The Java Project (Brooklyn, NY), Random Sample (Nashville, TN) and Spellerberg Projects (Lockhart, TX) and will participate in the 2024 düsseldorf photo+ biennial for visual and audio media. His work is in the permanent collection of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art (New Orleans, Louisiana).

Barreto earned a BA in Art from Yale University in 2009 and an MFA in Photography from the University of Hartford in 2021. He is currently an adjunct instructor at Lipscomb University and Middle Tennessee State University, a member of the artist collective Tiger Strikes Asteroid, and runs New World, an artist-run project space.
