Mannheim lay in ruins after the Second World War. On their way to school, the children passed plots of land in ruins and spent their free time in the backyards, on the Neckar meadow or on one of the many playgrounds. On Sundays, many regularly visited relatives in their allotments "uf de Insel, uf de Sellweid or am Stolle". The dilapidated tower of the "old department store" in N1 and the provisional flat roof of the water tower were just as normal for them as the lack of a bathroom at home, the old coal stove in the kitchen and the fact that they had to wear second-hand clothes. From time to time, their parents gave them admission to the Herschel or Herzogenriedbad swimming pools, the ice rink or the City Cinema.
