Ausstellung „110 Jahre Behrensbau. Architektur und Geschichte“

The new exhibition of the House of History North Rhine-Westphalia, extended until February 18, 2024.

Turbulent 110 years accompany the Behrensbau on the banks of the Rhine in Düsseldorf. Modern architecture, changeful economic history, political events, wars and crises of a century meet under one roof.

110 years after its inauguration, the House of History North Rhine-Westphalia will be showing the exhibition "110 Years of Behrensbau. Architecture and History." At the historic site, the exhibition takes a look at the building itself, its architect Peter Behrens and the Mannesmann Group.

At the end of the 19th century, business, art and architecture were on the verge of modernity. The artist Peter Behrens develops into a mastermind of new architecture and design; the Mannesmann brothers invent a revolutionary process for the production of seamless steel tubes. They pave the way for their company to become a global corporation.

In December 1912, Mannesmannröhren-Werke AG moves into the Behrensbau as its new headquarters. At this time, the office building is one of the most modern in Germany. The architecture is pioneering and flexible, creating space for a changing working world.

The Behrensbau also reflects the political events of a century: the French occupation in 1923, the Second World War, the British occupation after 1945 and the new political beginning in North Rhine-Westphalia. In the future, the Haus der Geschichte Nordrhein-Westfalen will use the Behrensbau as a contemporary history museum.
