From Morocco to Palestine. From the diaspora to our home countries. Psychedelic desert sounds as liberation & empowerment.
For the first time, diasporic lead singers and friends Yousra Mansour & Jamila Al-Yousef unite in a concert for women's empowerment & decolonial liberation. They will share the stage at SÄÄLCHEN Berlin with their bands Bab L'Bluz and Jamila & The Other Heroes. Both bands are known for combining psychedelic progressive rock with North African and West Asian rhythms, vocals and instruments.
Yousra & Jamila perform as an act of solidarity and empowerment. Both have released songs to end patriarchal and colonial structures and celebrate the strengths of women* and our female ancestors. After an incident of sexual harassment backstage, Jamila had an inspiring conversation with Yousra and wrote with her band Ya Habibi, La. With a feminist chorus, the song is about setting boundaries and creating awareness in the club and festival scene. Yousra recently released AmmA, a song about the injustice of women* still doing most of the care and being treated in a sexist way. Addressing her own precious mother, Yousra channels her anger into music that you will dance and sweat to!
This will be the first proper Berlin performance by the internationally acclaimed band Bab L'Bluz from Lyon, who are currently releasing their new album Swaken. Jamila & The Other Heroes will also be coming to Säälchen with their latest album Bazaar Bizarre. فلسطين وين أنا؟ (Palestine, where am I?) - the translation of the Arabic title - refers to Jamila's Palestinian diaspora identity. As an immeasurable tragedy unfolds before our eyes in Gaza and attempts to delegitimize and silence Palestinian voices around the world grow, her message is more relevant than ever. In songs like Fragments of Palestine, YABA or Border Syndrome, Jamila addresses the struggle against racism, occupation and the desire for liberation and equal rights for all who live in the region.
As friends and fellow musicians, Yousra & Jamila have chosen music as their weapon to fight injustice in the world. We invite you to witness their musical struggle for liberation and empowerment and enjoy the rich sounds of their bands.
Bab L'Bluz short bio:
Bab L'Bluz (literally "The Door of the Blues") is a Franco-Moroccan group formed in Marrakech in 2018 from the meeting of Moroccan singer/guitarist Yousra Mansour and French guitarist/producer Brice Bottin. Inspired by Gnawa music, they decided to learn the guembri together. With their electric guembris, Bab L'Bluz creates a mixture of Gnawa trance rhythms, Hassani chants from the south of Morocco and Chaâbi polyrhythms, catapulting their music into the magnetic fields of psychedelic rock and the spirals of incense.
Led by a female Doukkalia, the group aims to drive an attitude revolution and is part of the Moroccan youth movement "Nayda", a new wave of committed artists and musicians inspired by local heritage and singing freedom lyrics in the Moroccan Arabic dialect Darija. Very active since their inception, the energetic quartet travels the globe to spread their hypnotic riffs and pass on their mystical and liberating headbanging frenzy to their audiences - a true trademark of the group. Poetic and powerful, Bab L'Bluz is an expanding universe, a sonic territory that transcends borders. In 2020, Bab L'Bluz celebrated a stunning debut on the music stage with the album Nayda! (Mojo Top 10 World Album of the Year, Songlines Best Albums 2020, The New York Times, Vogue Arabia, BBC, Le Monde, Financial Times, Pan African Music, Uncut, Radio Nova or Arte Concert).
In 2021, Bab L'Bluz won his first Songlines Music Award and then embarked on a world tour that is still ongoing (Europe, Africa, America, Oceania)...

Short bio Jamila & The Other Heroes:
JAMILA & THE OTHER HEROES is a Berlin-based band from "Manywhere" that plays psychedelic desert funk to make you fly. The band is led by vibran Jamila, born the day the wall came down and raised by her influential Palestinian refugee father. Jamila composes music with her heroes to connect with transcultural audiences who can identify with the band's diaspora narratives and their musical fight against racism.
"As people with family backgrounds in Syria, Palestine, Italy and Colombia, we travel and create home in our music." Jamila's emancipatory message in Arabic and English is supported by powerful live musicians. Let yourself be carried away by an incomparable sound of psychedelic guitar riffs (Leon Sanchez) vibrating on a warm, earthy foundation of undulating bass lines (Felix 'Fema' Barth), Arabic percussion rhythms (Salam Alhassan) and Afrobeat, hip-hop and rock-influenced drum beats (Pier Ciaccio). The dance floor that JAMILA & THE OTHER HEROES create is an incubator for people to meet and practice cohesion - the musicians' answer to the exclusion mechanisms of our time. The band's message is simple: "We can all be heroes! Let's discover our superpowers and make the world a better place."
