Listening under water

Underwater sound installation in the Münstertherme Düsseldorf

With BADEKULTURMUSIK, the artist group Wellenbad, together with sound poet Jasmina Al-Qaisi, is transforming the outdoor saltwater pool at Münstertherme Düsseldorf into a special art space for a week: music, voices and sounds can only be heard underwater.
During the entire opening hours of the outdoor saltwater pool, two 15-minute audio pieces - artistic sound works between music, speech and noise - will run alternately in a continuous loop. The audio pieces alternate with the regular massage program of the massage jets, which remain in operation for the entire period. As soon as the jets pause, the next audio piece starts automatically. Visitors can join in at any time and listen for as long as they like.

Audio pieces
In the audio piece "Bathing Culture Rules", Wellenbad examines the emergence and effect of rules in bathing and cultural establishments. Atmospheric sounds are combined with sometimes absurd-sounding regulations from the past and present, which aim to organize protection and enjoyment at the same time - in thermal baths, saunas, clubs and opera houses. The second specially produced audio piece "May my tears moist your salt, Dead Sea" by Jasmina Al-Qaisi is a fabulous lament in which the progressive drying up of the Dead Sea is foreseen in a vision by the poet Sha'ir and mourned by him as early as the times of the Ottoman Empire.

BADEKULTURMUSIK combines sport, wellness and contemporary sound art in public spaces. All water lovers are cordially invited to listen to the audio pieces in the saltwater pool!

About the project:
Since 2023, Wellenbad (Cologne/Düsseldorf) has been performing in swimming pools with electronic music, voices and sounds that can only be heard underwater thanks to special underwater loudspeakers. The trio has already realized concerts and installations at Frankenbad Bonn, Münstertherme Düsseldorf, Innsbruck and Stadtbad Neukölln in Berlin.

The project will continue in Berlin in March 2026 and will take place in cooperation with Bädergesellschaft Düsseldorf, Berliner Bäder-Betriebe and Liquidrom Berlin. It is supported by Musikfonds e.V., the Cultural Office of the City of Düsseldorf and the Karin and Uwe Hollweg Foundation.
