Play by Peter Shaffer

Brindsley Miller, a talented but so far unsuccessful young sculptor, is expecting a visit from a rich Russian patron of the arts together with his fiancée. The future father-in-law also wants to get an idea of the artist's professional success that evening. His marriage to Carol could depend on it. In order to impress the important visitors, Brindsley decides to borrow some antiques from his neighbor, who is out of town, to furnish his spartan studio a little more impressively. But before the visitor arrives, something happens: short circuit, power failure, complete darkness throughout the house.

The neighbor comes by and suddenly the antiques dealer who came home earlier is standing in the doorway. The catastrophe takes its course.

The characters see nothing on this evening, but the audience sees everything: playwright Peter Shaffer uses a small but effective trick by reversing light and dark in the theater.
