About the book:
Naturalist, Explorer, Revolutionary: Bestselling author Andrea Wulf’s new book on the extraordinary life and fascinating journeys of Georg Forster
Georg Forster ventured into the remotest regions of the known world and challenged 18th-century ways of thinking with his radical ideas on humanity, equality, and freedom. Andrea Wulf paints a portrait of a brilliant, intrepid young man who, at the age of seventeen, joined Cook’s second voyage around the world—a journey spanning the icy Antarctic and the lush island worlds of the South Pacific. There, he explored nature, people, and cultures, and returned with a deep belief in the equality of all people—a belief that was far ahead of its time.
Celebrated upon his return in England, France, Germany, and Poland, Forster used his fame to advocate for freedom and equality and to oppose imperialism, racism, and slavery. Eventually, he was drawn into the maelstrom of the French Revolution and became a leader of the short-lived Republic of Mainz.
Told in a captivating style and based on Forster’s extensive correspondence, this book offers a glimpse into an extraordinary, passionate life.
