Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 5 in C minor op. 67
The famous "ta-ta-ta-taaaaa" is rather unspectacular. And fate is certainly not knocking at the door, as Beethoven's biographer Schindler tries to explain. Nor can it be described as a musical theme, it is more of a motif: embedded in the flow of a melody, performed in a strict rhythm. What Beethoven does with this musical nucleus is simply brilliant. He has the incredible ability to create a complex world out of something seemingly meaningless, a world that fascinates with its coherence and inner logic.
