Berlin is no longer what it used to be. Berliners see the stark changes in their city: more new buildings, more people, more chic. Inexpensive studios, cultural open spaces and neighborhood cultures seem to be disappearing altogether. This has harsh consequences for people who depend on affordable rental space. Berliners are also losing their apartments and thus their familiar surroundings in their neighborhoods. Many are demonstrating for fair rents and against displacement. The artists Barbara Bernardi and Vincent Voignier and talk in their guided tour about the changes in the city, but also about resistance and solidarity.
The tandem tour is a side event of the open space project Wir bleiben! Gentrification and Resistance in Berlin. The artistic works can be seen in the space Verflechtung of the exhibition BERLIN GLOBAL.
The tandem tour takes place as a duo. A mediator and a Berlin expert will lead a conversation through selected exhibition areas. The invited expert sets the thematic accent. The experts bring their diverse professional and personal backgrounds into the conversation. The experts may be a midwife, artist, small business owner, biologist, historian, archaeologist, psychologist, firefighter or restorer. People who have volunteered or curated the exhibition are also invited. Thus, each tandem tour is individual and unique.
Barbara Bernardi is an artist and filmmaker born in Italy and based in Berlin since 2008. Her multimedia installations, poetic films and photographs create intimate and sensual landscapes that tell stories of loss, grief and migration. She collects people's voices, words, and memories that become part of her participatory works, which have been exhibited and screened throughout Europe and the United States.
Vincent Voignier is a photographer and artist born in France and living in Berlin since 2003. In his works he aims to get to know communities and phenomena beyond the mainstream and portray them visually without prejudice or stereotypes.
