The two-day online orientation course provides a comprehensive introduction to the role and responsibilities of a Digital Imaging Technician (DIT) in film and television production.

The course is split into two days, four hours per day, and is delivered remotely via video conferencing. The aim is to provide participants with a sound understanding of the technical and organizational requirements and to prepare them for the real world.

PROGRAM

DAY 1: INTRODUCTION AND PREPARATION

Session 1: Introduction to the role of the DIT (1 hour)

• Welcome and introduction of the course leader
• Overview of the day-to-day work of a DIT
• Importance and development of the job profile in the film and television industry
• Expected qualifications and skills
• Security guidelines for digital productions (DFG and VTFF Guidelines)

Session 2: Production systems and workflow planning (1 hour)

• Advice on the selection of production systems for the desired look
• Planning and coordinating the workflow with post-production
• Testing and preparing the technology in collaboration with the camera assistant
• Documentation and coordination of data structures and data management

-PAUSE (30 minutes) -

Session 3: Technical basics and equipment (1 hour)

• Overview of industry-standard cameras, storage media, monitors, workstations
• Practical measurement technology: waveform monitor, vectorscope, histogram
• Calibration and look management of the technology

Session 4: Q&A (1 hour)

• Practical examples and discussion of common scenarios
• Questions and answers

DAY 2: SHOOTING TIME AND POSTPRODUCTION

Session 1: Technical implementation during shooting (1 hour)

• First technical check on location: near-set, on-set & off-set
• Responsibility for compliance with technical workflows
• Collaboration with camera assistants and other trades

Session 2: Data management (1 hour)

• Data management on set and spot checks
• Data backup and further processing of camera data
• Technical and visual control of the image material (reporting)

-PAUSE (30 minutes) -

Session 3: Sample creation and handover (1 hour)

• Implementation of the desired image character with lookup tables (LUTs) and grading tools such as Davinci Resolve
• Communication with image design specialist (DoP, director, producer)
• Sample creation and generation of working copies
• Material logistics and handover of shots to post-production

Session 4: Conclusion and Q&A (1 hour)

• Summary of key course content
• Discussion on further learning resources and next steps
• Open Q&A and feedback
