The marriage of jazz saxophonist Fred Madison (Bill Pullman) is on the brink. When he is arrested after a party and accused of murdering his wife Renee (Patricia Arquette), he ends up on death row. Plagued by severe headaches and visions of the Mystery Man (Robert Blake), Fred transforms into car mechanic Pete Dayton (Balthazar Getty). The guards, who find the innocent stranger in the cell, have to let Pete go. But it soon transpires that all are lost, trapped in their own fate...on the Lost Highway.

Lost Highway bears David Lynch's unmistakable signature and is considered a precursor to the acclaimed Mulholland Drive (2001), which was released shortly afterwards. The typically mysterious Lynch sound was provided by his long-time artistic companion Angelo Badalamenti, who was no stranger to audiences at the time, having already contributed the unforgettable sounds to Lynch's cult series The Secret of Twin Peaks (1990-91).
